About Me

Paddy,

I may tell you more about me than you really want to know but once I start talking about myself it’s hard to stop.

I am an old maverick Texas songwriter and I’ve been writing and singing Americana music since well before they had a name for it. Back then they just said we were too folk for country and too country for folk.

I was born and raised in Waco, Texas. (Lately some people call it Wacko.) To call us low income would be just about right. Dad was always gone and my mom worked two jobs so as soon as I could reach the doorknob I was a free man. And with nobody to teach me all the “everybody knows that’s” I was blessed with a free mind. It got me in some jams but it was good training for a songwriter. Being something of a wild child I wasn’t heavy on social skills so I sang to myself a lot to keep myself company. I grew up on Texas country and western and forties pop. By the time I was fourteen I could do a pretty fair imitation of many of the singers of the time.

I started singing professionally while I was a student at the University of Texas which brought my college education to a screeching halt. That’s when I discovered that girls like musicians and college couldn’t compete.

Since then, with my wife Miss Dollie I’ve played everything from uptown lounges to Greenwich Village coffee houses to down-home Texas knife-and-gun honkytonks. We’ve played all kinds of venues from New York to LA with lots of stops in between. We’ve looked down gun barrels and dodged beer bottles and made it out the back door with my guitar while the Hell’s Angels trashed a club. We toured the pacific military bases with the USO back during the Viet Nam war and were signed songwriters with Seals and Crofts’ Dawnbreaker Publishing in Hollywood.

I’m so thankful for stations like Ears Radio that open the door for us mavericks living outside the herd . My musical tastes run to traditional country, folk, pop, gospel, blues and classic rock. I’ve never been a DJ before but it sounds like fun and I’m teachable.
